Environment and Research

This News Alert Service is provided by the European Commission.

DG Environment has decided to establish this service in order to reinforce the links between science and policy. The service provides scientific information in the field of the main themes of the Environmental Action Programme and relevant to DG Environment policy priorities in support of the knowledge based approach.

The target audience are policy makers as well as the wider public.

The Getty Conservation Institute

The Getty Conservation Institute "works internationally to advance conservation practice in the visual arts." and their mission includes conservation projects that involve architecture, individual objects, and site examinations. Site contains a "What's New" area on the right-hand side of the homepage which has short videos on Asian orange colorants, information about Middle East heritage databases, and a direct link to the latest edition of the GCI's newsletter, "Conservation". It also has a "Free PDF Publications" area contains access to full-length books, reports, glossaries, and short papers published by the GCI as well as "Videos and Audio" area containing talks."

Green Vehicle Guide

This is a tool designed for those considering purchasing a new vehicle and facilitates comparisons on the greenhouse and air pollution emissions ratings of up to 3 current makes and models.

The rating is calculated using data provided by manufacturers from testing the vehicle against Australian standards.

Internet Bird Collection

The Internet Bird Collection (IBC) is a non-profit endeavour with the ultimate goal of disseminating knowledge about the world's avifauna. It is an on-line audiovisual library of footage of the world's birds that is available to the general public free of charge. While the initial aim is to post at least one video per species, the long-term objective is to eventually include several videos showing a variety of biological aspects (e.g. feeding, breeding, etc.) for every species.
